Selling Products by Weight or Volume in the General Store

Selling Products by Weight or Volume in the General Store

Some store items aren't sold one at a time — think propane by the gallon or ice by the pound. The General Store lets you set a unit of measure on a product so you can sell fractional amounts, like 2.5 gallons of propane, with pricing and stock counts that work the way you'd expect.

Set a Product's Unit of Measure

  1. Open your General Store inventory and create a new product, or edit an existing one.
  2. In the Unit of Measure dropdown, choose how the product is sold: Gallon (gal), Kilogram (kg), Liter (L), Pound (lb), Ounce (oz), or Other.
  3. Enter the price per unit in the Price field — for example, $3.50 means $3.50 per gallon.
  4. If the product tracks inventory, enter how much you have on hand in the Quantity field. The field label updates to show your unit, such as Quantity (gal), and decimals are allowed.
  5. Save the product.

The product card in your store now shows the price per unit (for example, "$3.50/gal") and the stock amount with its unit.

Sell Fractional Quantities at Checkout

  1. Add the measured product to the cart from the product card.
  2. In the cart, measured products show a quantity box instead of plus and minus buttons. Type the exact amount sold — for example, 2.5. The box only accepts numbers, and the minimum is 0.01.
  3. If the amount entered is more than you have in stock, you'll see a "Not enough stock" warning with the available amount, and the Checkout button is disabled until you fix the quantity.
  4. Complete checkout with any payment method as usual.

The receipt shows the quantity and unit in the item label — for example, "2.5 gal Propane." Regular products still use the plus and minus buttons, with whole numbers only.

How Stock Counts Work

Stock for measured products is tracked in the same unit you sell in, and it can be a decimal. Selling 2.5 gallons subtracts 2.5 from your count on hand. If a product tracks inventory and the stock hits zero, the add-to-cart button disappears from its product card so staff can't oversell it.

Importer and Exporter Notes

If you manage products by spreadsheet, the product export now includes a Unit of Measure column, and the importer accepts it too. Use the short unit codes (gal, kg, L, lb, oz, or other), and feel free to use decimal values in the Count on Hand column for measured products.
